Remember going to grandma's house and eating on the fancy plates she kept on display in her sideboard during special occasions? A stock of fancy dinnerware may be a lifetime's work, but choosing the right sideboard to display your most prized china doesn't need as much patience. Doing your research and understanding your needs can help you pick out the right sideboard for your fine dinnerware.
The first step is to understand the space you have in your dining room in order to choose the right sideboard. Make sure to measure the dimensions of your dining room and your dining table, with the chairs pulled out so that there is ample room for people to get up from the dinner table to fetch a gravy boat or another tea saucer. You don't want the sideboard to be too large, but equally a sideboard that is too small for the room & the rest of the furniture should be avoided as well.
Take your measurements with you when shopping online or visiting a furniture retailer. This can help you narrow down your search and keep you from bringing home a piece of furniture, while lovely, just doesn't fit properly in your home. Make sure any cupboards in your sideboard can be opened with ease and not hit the leg of your antique dining chair. It's easy to buy the wrong thing if you are not firmly focused on wat you actually need, as you can easily be dazzled by a nice design!
Style can be very personal, and coordinating your new sideboard with your dining table is very important. Take pictures in various lights to help you match the particular stain or tone of the material of your dining table. Modern materials are much easier to match than stained wood and you may find a style savvy sideboard that might encourage you to buy a new dining room table!
It doesn't need to match exactly, but it should be complementary. A lacquer sideboard in white, black or a soft neutral colour can work wonderfully with a glass or wooden dining table in a contemporary style, for instance.
The sideboard competes with the dining table for being the focal piece of furniture in the dining room. Remember that good style in dining room furniture is subjective. Someone who prefers a fancy dining table setting might want a sideboard with solid or opaque doors to keep the fancy china from competing with the table setting. A plainer table setting or dining room decor would want transparent doors or a sideboard with no doors to have the dinnerware become part of the dining room style.
If your dining table & chairs is very plain you might want to consider an Oriental style sideboard, perhaps a stunning lacquered Chinese sideboard with a pattered front & large bronze clasp, or an ornate mother of pearl inlaid sideboard from India or Morocco? These can really add something to your dining room if the rest of your decor is fairly plain.
Shopping is the easy part, making yourself happy can be less frustrating with a little planning. Good luck and happy shopping!
There is a fantastic selection of sideboards on the internet. One site with a large collection of sideboards & dining room furniture is Go Modern, a London based contemporary furniture retailer.
